From the inner bark of the ‘Mutuba’ tree (Natalansis), a soft, fine texture called bark cloth is harvested. This unique material is created through a traditional process of “beating” the bark using a specially made, heavy grooved mallet known as an ‘Ensaamu.’
Widows, youth, and disabled persons source this bark cloth to create uniquely Ugandan items that preserve our cultural heritage.
